NYPT Health & Rehab offers electric muscle stimulation in NYC by trained and experienced physical therapists.
What is Electrical Muscle Stimulation?
EMS is a physical therapy modality that stimulates muscles using electric impulses delivered to motor points of the muscle at a safe current level through electrodes placed on the skin. These impulses cause the muscle to contract and then relax, resulting in improved muscle tone and strength.
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
Muscle contraction resulting from EMS can be beneficial to patients recovering from injury that may otherwise not be able to exercise particular muscles or those interested in strengthening specific muscles. In addition to its muscle strengthening benefits, electric muscle stimulation, also called neuromuscular electrical stimulation, can improve circulation and increase the range of motion of treated muscles, prevent muscle atrophy in individuals that cannot use specific muscles, and can relax muscle spasms. The benefits of electrical muscle stimulation can result in improved and faster healing from injury.
